Beech Class Duke Of Edinburgh

This page has been designed, written and built by Jack, Noah, Preston and Jacob, students in Beech Class, as part of their ASDAN PSE Short Course.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a voluntary, non-competitive youth development program for people aged 14–24 in the UK and globally. It empowers young people to develop skills, resilience, and confidence through four main sections as set out below. In Beech class, we have 7 students working towards bronze award and 1 student who is working towards silver award.

Volunteering

We are doing work experience around the school and other places such as The Bath and West, Bishop’s Palace, maintenance of the Mendip School grounds, Greenfield Cafe and vehicle maintenance – see our WEX page for more information.

Our gardening skills sessions also contribute to our volunteering requirement.

Skills

For our skills, we do gardening. One thing we have previously done in gardening is remove weeds  from the plants in the courtyard. Another thing we done was removing items, like wood, plastic, rubbish, unnecessary plants and gravel from the poly tunnel, which we took down after.

Physical

We have been doing exercise related activities, including gym, padel and walks. We have been running, using weights and doing stretches for the gym activity. Padel is a game which is a mix between tennis and squash.

Expedition

As part of the DofE award, we need to undertake an expedition. This means walking for two days and campipng out overnight for the Bronze award, or three days walking and two nights camping for the Silver award. The students need to do all of the map reading and have plotted the routes that will be taken

Our practice expedition is scheduled for May on the Mendips.

Our final expedition is scheduled for July on the Quantocks.
