Post-16 and Careers

Post 16

Our Post-16 Leaflet can be found Here

Post 16 provision at The Mendip School takes place in our purpose built wing of the School. This area of the school has a more college like feel to it and students have access to facilities such as their own common room. The curriculum compromises a mixture of life skills, employability skills, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) as well as Functional Skills qualifications in Maths, English. Each year we look at our cohort and design the curriculum to meet their needs and this year we will be delivering two ASDAN qualifications; COPE and a short course in Employability.
Post 16 is a transitional time and we pride ourselves on setting students up for their next steps. Each student will have a personalised timetable which will include a mixture of the following:
  • Visits to further education providers/ specialised providers
  • Careers advice and guidance
  • Healthy lifestyle in the local community
  • Functional skills in literacy and numeracy/ or GCSE resits if a student gets a grade 3 in either English or maths
  • Extended work experience placements in the local community
  • Independence skills such as travel, cooking and cleaning their own home
  • Residential experiences
Students do not have to come to post 16 at the Mendip School when they have finished year 11 and they will have many other options open to them in the local area. However many students will opt to stay with us until they feel ready to access a programme at their local Further Education College, a specialised college or even a job. Students are able to stay in post 16 until they reach 19 years of age, although some may chose to leave earlier than this. Whatever they decide our curriculum will support them to decide on and transition to their next opportunity.
From year 14 some students will have the opportunity to apply for Project Search. Project Search is a supported internship programme run by Fosse Way School, Virgin Care and the Royal United Hospital. This is a one year programme for young people who are ready for work. Students take part in three 10 week placements alongside studying maths, English, PSHE and an employability qualification. Students are supported by a job coach and a teacher to find a long lasting career.
